living like the main character… before the movie starts.

Rom com leads always seem to lead these glamorous, amazing, slightly unpredictable lives. Maybe they swap houses with a woman in Los Angeles, or a famous actress happens to enter their bookshop, or they save their longtime crush from being run over by a train. Some are royalty, some are badass businesswomen, and some are just unfairly attractive people in the right place at the right time.

So… if the leads in these movies are, as i’ve been told, meant to be relatable, then why do their lives seem so out of reach?

Before Kate Winslet came to LA to become her own leading lady, she was just a sad English woman stuck at an office job. Before Hugh Grant met Julia Roberts and fell in love, he was just some guy who had a travel bookshop. Before Sandra Bullock found the love of her life by almost marrying his brother, she was just a lonely train worker.

I have decided that the lives of these stars are not out of reach- I have decided that I am simply in the “before” stage. I am building the backstory that is essential to a beloved character ready for the love of her life.

Now, that’s not to say that my whole life should be spent waiting- and it’s not to say that yours should be, either. I would KILL to be a bridesmaid 27 times (I love to dress up), just like some people would kill to be taking a gap year like I am. The “before” stage of rom coms is the most important stage- without all of their history & all of the life they’ve lived, these beloved characters wouldn’t be REAL.

So, here’s what I’m proposing: Don’t wait around for your prince to come, or for some big dramatic change- start living like the leading lady, now. Realize that your life IS glamorous, amazing, and unpredictable, just in it’s own way!

Stay tuned, though for how to live that life… I still haven’t quite figured it out yet. But maybe thats part of living in the “before”- you just have to treat it as the “now”.

xoxo Abigail
