This morning, I had a thanksgiving leftover sandwich for breakfast. My family back home has, I’m sure, already begun bringing boxes of decor down from the attic, and where I’m at the Christmas markets are in full swing. All of that can only mean one thing: it is, officially, the Christmas season.
Those of you Christmas purists who think that it doesn’t start until December first, that’s ok. I just strongly disagree with you. What part about this being the most wonderful time of the year do you not get? Of COURSE I’m going to start celebrating as soon as I can!
Whether you haven’t started celebrating yet, you celebrate all year, or you’re like me, I know we can all appreciate a good Christmas rom com. Without further ado, here is my personal list of all of the best Christmas rom coms- why I love them, and where you can find them.
Classics:
in my mind, these are THE Christmas rom coms.
- The Holiday (2006) on Disney+
- This is THE quintessential Christmas Rom Com. It’s got something for everyone- a super relatable leading lady on one side, a super attractive leading man on another side, just enough drama and loads of warm fuzzy feelings. This is a favorite among my parents and I- we like to say that we’re like Jude Law and his kids, the three musketeers. If you haven’t seen this movie, stop reading this blog post and go watch it, right now.
- While you were sleeping (1995) on Disney+
- This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think I once rewatched it three times in the span of one week. It’s got those cozy Christmas vibes, lots of hilarious drama, and a swoon worthy love story with lots of twists and turns.
- The Family Stone (2005) on Disney+
- This is a new one to me, and a little bit cooky, but I love it. Its vibes are a bit less cozy and a bit more along the lines of second hand embarrassment. It will leave you thankful for how much less messed up your family (hopefully) is than theirs, but it will also leave you laughing, and maybe even crying a bit.
Netflix Originals:
I’m big on traditions, so I made my own traditions by cozying up and watching these ones ever. Single. Year.
- A Christmas Inheritance (2017) on Netflix
- This one- and, in fact, every one on this section of the list- is the cheesiest thing you’ve ever seen, and I LOVE it! It’s predictable, it’s dramatic, it’s romantic, and it’s a must- watch for me.
- A Christmas Prince (2017) On Netflix
- Ok, apparently 2017 was a great year for Christmas movies on Netflix. This one has the glamour of royalty, and spunky yet relatable main character, and is chock full of Christmas coziness and traditions. Its sequels are just as fun, although not as “classic” in my eyes.
- The Knight Before Christmas (2019) On Netflix
- This one has the coziness, the suspense, the hilarious jokes, and most importantly, a knight in shining armor. What’s not to like? This is another yearly rewatch for me, or sure.
My Watchlist:
As much as I may be addicted to Rom Coms, and obsessed with Christmas, I haven’t seen it all.
- Love Actually (2003) On Disney + or Amazon Prime
- This is a CLASSIC Christmas Rom com, and one that I am ashamed I haven’t seen yet. I mean, it’s got Hugh Grant. That means I HAVE to see it! All I know about this one is that it follows multiple couples and had a huge impact on our pop culture- it’s a must watch, for sure.
Honorable Mention:
- Elf (2003) available to rent
- This is not technically a rom com, but it does certainly have romance and comedy, and it is an absolute classic. I don’t think I know anyone who hadn’t seen it, but if you haven’t, you’ve got to- it’s such a blast. The romance that is there was swoon worthy, at least to little me, but the Christmas spirit in it is off the charts. I love it!
If you can’t tell, I am SO excited for the Christmas season. The movies, while certainly not the best part, are a huge added bonus. Expect lots of posts from me that are heavily saturated with the Christmas Spirit over the next month.
Tis the season,
Abigail
